Artistic Council

In order to help establish an original teaching ecosystem and achieve greatness through community, regardless of nationality or background, the Baltic Sea Music Education Foundation e. V. put in place an Artistic Council with members including musical luminaries Valery Gergiev, Marek Janowski, Mariss Jansons (†), Kurt Masur (†) and Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Kurt Masur has now twice conducted the Baltic Sea Youth Philharmonic, expressing his thrill at the spirit brought to life by the young musicians on stage. In 2013, Kurt Masur also led an international conducting masterclass. Kurt Masur chose seven participants from more than 100 applications from all over the world. The young conductors came from Russia, Germany, South Korea, USA and Taiwan. At the end of the one-week workshop they had the opportunity to make their debut performance at the Usedom Music Festival together with Kurt Masur and the Baltic Sea Youth Philharmonic.

Valery Gergiev
is General and Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Mariinsky Theatre of St. Petersburg. He has guest conducted most of the world‘s major orchestras, such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic. With a multi-faceted life, he is a uniquely dynamic and creative force in music today.

Marek Janowski
has been Artistic Director of the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin since 2002, as well as the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. He is in demand as a guest conductor throughout the world, working regularly with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchester der Tonhalle Zürich, and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.

Mariss Jansons  (†)
The Riga-born conductor is recognized as one of the most distinguished musicians of his generation. Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Chief Conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, he was also Principal Conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Kurt Masur (†)
is well-known as both a distinguished conductor and humanist. He was Chief Conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra and the New York and London Philharmonic Orchestras. Education has been his lifelong passion, and he is deeply committed to strengthening musical traditions at every level of society.

Esa-Pekka Salonen
The Finnish conductor and composer was Chief Conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 1992 until 2009. He is renowned for his interpretations of contemporary music and has given countless premieres of new works.
